I don't see what's so threatening about hipsters, same with the whole emo bashing amongst the net a few years ago. Hipster is not a synonym for counterculture or even subculture; it's an example thereof. So, its not a contradiction to say hipsters are mainstream, it's just a critique of our culture. The "mainstream ideal" is not being resisted when the mainstream redefines itself to exploit hipsters.

@senatorkenator while I agree with you, actually for hipster to be mainstream, is a contradiction, since it's a collective of subcultures that resist the mainstream ideal, basically of media, music, and fashion. While many companies now are doing their best to switch from secene/emo, hipster style, now that trying to mainstream underground hipster culture is the new way(indie music, underground electronic, etc), selling thrifty kiij clothes at a high price(see Hottopic), etc.
